After a fantastic soup supper, thanks to the weekend cooks, excited hashers gathered in Kirkby Stephen YH entrance hall a little after 8:00, eager to pound the fells on such a beautiful starlit night. The promise of a good pub-stop fuelled the enthusiasm and warnings from the hares to heed the notice on the trail about rabbits stirred curiosity.
Antiseptic live hared the first 100m across the main street until we picked up trail down a narrow ginnel, crossing the Eden to a r-w split and we were in darkness. The rambo trail proved to be a circuit of a huge riverside field but was enough to let the wimps get well ahead to the disused railway. The trail followed this for a couple of miles with the breeze at our backs and glorious views over KS and the surrounding dales (at night we had to use our imagination) until we arrived at the warning notice, not about rabbits but their holes. Sure enough White Noise crashed into one while warning fellow hashers not to.
An easy mile of run-in on downhill tarmac then brought us to the Bay Horse at Winton for a welcome guzzle or three by a log fire. Later, a fifteen minute jog returned us to the Black Bull in KS and further good company and beer. The circle could wait for tomorrow.
This was the perfect on on to a great hash weekend, though the weather was yet to have it's main influence. Read on...
